Hailing from Brooklin, Ontario, Mathew Iceton recently earned professional status on the PGA Canada Tour (Mackenzie Tour) after a standout college and amateur career that included ten NCAA college wins and earned several awards while at West Liberty University. Iceton is now one step closer to his optimal goal of playing on the PGA Tour. This has been a dream of Mathew’s since he started playing competitive golf at the age of 12. Mathew’s natural ability and dedication to the game of golf will assist him in posting strong results and achieving his dreams.
Not only does Mathew have the dedication and passion for the game of golf, he also has the mental toughness and grit required to be successful. He thrives under pressure which he has demonstrated in his wins coming from behind as well as his play-off wins. As Bobby Jones said “Golf is a game that is played on a five-inch course — the distance between your ears”.
Mathew is a well-rounded athlete who excelled in several team sports prior to finding a passion for the game of golf. Over several years, Mathew’s team sports accomplishments include two Ontario Minor Hockey Association championships, a Provincial Lacrosse title and a Provincial Volleyball championship. Mathew was also a very strong distance runner winning multiple Cross Country races and distance track events.
Since graduating from University, Mathew has been working hard on his game. In order to gain some financial stability to help him achieve his dream, he has also been coaching the youth in our community and working as a proshop assistant.
I have had the pleasure of getting to know Matt both as a golfer and as a person over the past ten years now, and I must say that he is among the most talented young athletes I have witnessed developing over these past ten years.
I have spent considerable time working with and alongside National level players, and Matt has exactly what these players have – a mix of god-given talent and dedication to his craft that leads to continued improvement and refinement. Matt hits its very long, is a remarkable iron player, has deft touch around the greens, and can putt with the best players in the game. In terms of his skill set, he is a full package player.
Outside of his performance on the course, Matt has also been developing into a very popular assistant coach within our coaching academy. Matt has enjoyed working with young players and sharing his expertise with them, and he has become quite a mentor for hundreds of junior players coming up behind him.
Matt has been working hard over this past year to further refine his putting stroke and his wedge play, and to reduce his side-spin a little on longer shots. He is also working on his pre-shot routine and his overall self-talk when he competes. With the improvements he’s making he is surely going to achieve even greater heights in this game then his already accomplished resume which boasts 10 NCAA wins and numerous other accomplishments in the Ontario and Canadian landscape.
I was asked recently to prognosticate on which of the players I know and work with would be most likely to “make it” to the greatest heights in the game. My answer, after deliberation, was Mathew. The reason for this is that he’s in possession of so many raw talents that he is refining, and that he has a proven track record of winning and performing in clutch situations.
Mathew Iceton played golf for us at West Liberty University. From the moment he set foot on the golf course, he was a force to be reckoned with. By the end of his freshman year, Matt had earned Freshman of the Year honors in the newly formed Mountain East Conference, narrowly missing out on being named Player of the Year. Upon completion of his sophomore year, Matt successfully earned Player of the Year honors. To summarize his amazing career, Matthew won ten tournaments in the four year span of his college golf career. He was named 1st team all-conference four times. Additionally, he was named to the NCAA 1st team all-region team on four separate occasions. Overall, Matt is one of the greatest players to wear the black and gold at West Liberty University.
Matt served as team captain during his junior and senior campaigns. As captain, Matt helped lead the Hilltoppers to 7 team titles, was well respected and loved by his teammates. He was always willing to assist his teammates and coach with whatever needed to be done. He was active in campus affairs as he represented the team as our SAAC representative. He was also highly respected by his fellow competitors and opposing coaches for his integrity and demeanor in heat of competition.
In conclusion, Matt Iceton is a mature, intelligent and respectful young man, a coaches’ “dream”. He will be an asset to anything or anyone he becomes involved with.
